Why Are My Windows Foggy? (And Why Cleaning Won’t Fix It)

If you’ve noticed your windows looking foggy or cloudy no matter how much you try to clean them, you’re not alone. At Go To Cleaning Services, we get this question all the time.

June 16, 2025

"Why do my windows still look foggy even after cleaning?”

Let’s break it down.

What Causes Foggy Windows?

Foggy windows are usually caused by a broken seal between the panes of double-pane(or insulated) windows. Modern windows are designed with two panes of glass and asealed space in between that’s often filled with argon or another insulating gas. This setup improves energy efficiency and reduces noise, but over time, that seal can break.

When the seal fails, moisture gets trapped inside the glass unit, between the panes. That moisture condenses and causes the foggy or hazy look you see. This is especially common in older windows or windows exposed to:

  • Constant sun (which breaks down the seal over time)
  • Harsh Michigan weather changes
  • Poor installation or frame warping
  • Water infiltration from siding or roofing issues

Can Foggy Windows Be Cleaned?

Unfortunately, no.

Because the fog is inside the sealed unit, no amount of exterior or interior cleaning will fix it. This isn’t dirt or hard water, it’s condensation between the glass. A squeegee, cleaner, or scrub pad won’t reach that space. That’s why we always explain to our customers: “If it’s between the glass, it’s a glass issue, not a cleaning issue.”

What Are the Fixes for Foggy Windows?

If you’re dealing with fogged-up windows, here are your options:

1. Replace the IGU (Insulated Glass Unit): Some companies specialize in replacing just the glass portion, without removing thewhole window frame. This is often the most affordable fix.

2. Replace the Whole Window: In some cases, especially if the frame is rotting or outdated, a full window replacementmight be the better investment.

3. Live With It (Temporarily): If the fog isn’t affecting visibility too badly, some homeowners choose to leave it until itgets worse or they’re ready for a full window upgrade.

How to Prevent Foggy Windows in the Future

  • Keep gutters and siding clean to prevent water (see page)
  • Address any leaks in roofing or around window frames
  • Use proper window coverings that allow ventilation
  • Hire professional installers for window replacements
  • Get regular exterior cleanings to extend window life
